The Norwegian word for this very important symbol (Ægishjálmr or Aegishjalmur) is translated into English as "helm of awe" or "helm of terror." The meaning of the name reverence is to strike with fear and reverence; to be influenced by fear, terror or respect.
The name "Aegishjalmur" comes from Aegir (Ægir in the old northern "sea"), the god in the sea of Jotunheim, the millet giants and one of the nine areas of the ash tree, Yggdrasil.
