Shaving brushes
A shaving brush is a brush that is used to apply shaving soap or shaving cream to the skin before shaving. One of the properties of the brush is also that it foams up soap and cream in a good way to a good shaving foam and gives the skin a certain exfoliating effect. The shaving brush prepares and softens the skin for shaving and lifts the beard hairs. The modern shaving brush has its history from 1750s France.
Traditionally, shaving brushes are made from badger hair. Badger hair, unlike many other types of fur, attracts water instead of repelling it. Water is the basis of wet shaving, as the name suggests. There are several different types of badger hair used in the manufacture of shaving brushes. The quality varies depending on where the animal's hair is taken from. From the side and legs of the badger comes the most common and worst variety, so-called "Pure Badger". From the neck of the badger there is the finest kind of hair of which the most expensive shaving bristles are made, so-called "Silvertip Badger". In between are the varieties "Black Badger", "Best Badger" and "Super Badger".
Another variant is a shaving brush with wild boar hair so-called "Bristel" which is usually cheaper. The bristle brush does not hold water as well and is usually harder; a bristle brush is usually recommended for those who have problems with ingrown beard hairs because it gives a better "peeling effect" - it lifts out the hairs before they become infected. The bristle brush is used in combination with hard soap.
Several different types of synthetic shaving brushes exist. They are all made of different types of nylon and the quality between these can differ greatly. In the early 00's, manufacturers of synthetic shaving brushes began to take inspiration from brushes for make-up, which meant that the quality only then increased to become comparable with natural hair of better quality. Synthetic brushes have the advantages that they dry faster, require less water and foaming product, are more durable, do not need to be softened in water before and have a more even quality. Their disadvantages are that they can not absorb as much water, do not retain heat as well and not even those of the highest quality are as soft as those with natural hair can be.
In general, you can say that shaving brushes with short bristles better suited for a shaving soap and brushes of longer hair fit well with a shaving cream, but it is possible to use most shaving brushes for both shaving creams and shaving soaps.
